Walking on the treadmill can be a great form of cardiovascular exercise when done correctly. A very common mistake that I see daily is that people hold on to the side rails, heart rate handles, or console the entire time while walking. This makes the exercise much less effective and burns less calories. The human body was meant to swing its arms while walking or running, and when you don’t use your arms it can create a lot of dysfunctional movement patterns in your body. Holding on while walking can also create postural problems from hunching your shoulders forward and looking down. So next time after you get started on the treadmill, let go of those handles and swing your arms, you will get a better workout and feel better also!
